Over the next 2 weeks I will be posting what I find to be the 5 most interesting micronations. Here is number 5.
Name - Independent State of Aramoana
Ruler – none
Location – South island of New Zealand
About This Micronation – In early 1980 a company was working on building an aluminum smelting plant in an environmentally sensitive area known as Aramoana. The plant called for two small towns to be destroyed, and in the process, irreversible damage would be done to the areas native plant and wildlife. In December of 1980 some citizens of New Zealand intervened by declaring that they had created a new nation, and in effect seceding from New Zealand. The new country issued passports, citizenship papers, and even printed their own stamps. The money for the aluminum smelting plant eventually fell through, and the plans for the building were canceled, the citizens of the Independent State of Aramoana reintegrated back into the country of New Zealand.
