The Blob (1958) and The Host (2006)

The other day a person ringing up my groceries told me that there is a lot of formaldehyde that goes into the making of newer t-shirts. “Just ring up my groceries” is what I was initially thinking but then I decided to tell her about the Korean creature/monster movie The Host. Afterwards she said, “Oh is it kind of like The Blob?” I said yes, but any connoisseur knows that the Blob came from outer space while the creature in The Host was a direct result (or so we think) of large quantities of formaldehyde being poured down a sink. These are distinctions that, while seemingly little, are the framework for two entirely different sub-genres. Anyway…

The more I thought about the conversation, the more I thought that pairing the two together would be fantastic. You should start your night with The Blob, and a large heaping portion of an ice cream that you would not normally buy. The movie will seem a bit cheesy, with well-behaved teenagers and ultra friendly policemen working together to destroy this blob that has attacked their town, but you will see the classic story in all it’s gory…I mean glory. Haha. After this, put in The Host and grab another scoop of ice cream. PLEASE set the subtitles on because this is a Korean film. DO NOT watch it dubbed, that’s the worst thing you could do…trust me. So, in this one you will watch a family working together to defeat their enemy (both the monster and the corrupted people). The monster is quite fantastic and believable, the special effects are good, and the movie is a bit dark, so be prepared for some fun.

Tell me what you think!
